I LOVE YOU. Just three words. Eight letters. Three of the most simple words in the English language, yet three of the hardest to say when strung together. It has always confused me as to why some people have a hard time saying it. I grew up in a very loving family. We say “I Love You” all the time. I tell my mom and brother I love them every time I talk to them. I don’t even think about it. It just comes naturally. We never end a phone call w/out saying it. In fact, I wait until I hear the response, before I hang up.

I know not everyone is as close to their family as I am, but everyone has someone in their life that they love and who loves them. It can be your BFF, your partner, your friends, your coworkers. It may seem weird at first, but everyone loves hearing it. They say actions speak louder than words, which is true. So, then why say it? Sometimes actions aren’t enough. Using words to back up your feelings just affirm your actions. So when your actions match your words, it’s more likely your message will be received.

I have a story about this that just happened a few weeks ago. My homegirl, Wanga took me out to lunch for my birthday. As we were saying good bye, I hugged (squeezed) her and said “Bye, I love you”. She said “Love you too.” She paused. Looked at me and said. “You know. You’re the only person other than my family I say that to. I don’t even know when we started doing that. When we say good bye on the phone, I say it. It just comes out.” I responded. “Ya, I noticed we started doing that, but didn’t notice exactly when we started, but whatevers. I do love you. You are like a sister to me. So, who cares?” She said. “Ya who cares? I’ll see ya later.” Then I said. “I Love You. Thanks for lunch”. She said. “I love you, too.” Then she smiled and waved as she walked to her car.

I have been friends w/ Wanga since summer orientation at UCLA, 14 years ago. I think it’s actually fitting that the first friend I ever made in college is still my friend and one of the closest I have. Wanga, I will love you forever. You are more than just a friend. You are family. I love you!

As for my other friends and family, I love you, too! It’s hard to single people out, because I know I’m gonna forget some people. But I’m gonna give shout outs to people I KNOW read this and those that are close to me, that may read one day. Family: Ninang Nonang, Uncle John, Ninang Babes, Ninong Boss, Ninong Jam, Ninang Virgee, Ninong Perico, Luba, Lani, Kim, Jose, Joel, Tanya, Ate Trixie, Kuya Bon, Ryan, Joelito, Cheryl, Jen and of course Mom and Bro! Everyone on this list has affected me in one way or another. I am who I am because of you. I LOVE YOU.

So, don’t be afraid to say I LOVE YOU. Express it. Say it. Especially if you don’t say it often. It’ll make it that much more special. Don’t have regrets. You never know what can happen. Even if I say it all the time, I don’t think that it lessens it meaning. It shouldn’t as long as you mean it. I mean it every time I say it.
