Ask And You Shall Receive

Act 127:

“It’s never too late… To Ask For What You Want

If you don’t ask, you won’t get. It’s usually true. Don’t assume others know what you want. Or need. Don’t blame them if you don’t communicate. Be reasonable. Be fair. But be clear.” – Patrick Lindsay

Quote in book: “Ask and it shall be given to you.” ~ The Bible, Matthew 7:7

My boss always tells me you can’t get anything unless you ask. And in most situations… what’s the worst thing that can happen? They say no? What’s the best that can happen? You get what you want? Rejection sucks, but it’s a small price to pay for the chance of getting what you want.

A lot of the time other people don’t know what your thinking. So, they really don’t know what they want. If you are vocal and ask or tell them what you want. You are more likely to get it. To me this is all about communications. Between family, friends, co-workers, spouses, lovers... even when you’re talking to customer service representatives. I have two really good examples of benefitting from asking (when I normally wouldn’t)

The first is NFL Sunday ticket. As we all know, Football is back! YAY! The first week of football Direct TV had a bunch of commercials stating that NFL Sunday ticket was free for this year. What they didn’t’ say was that the offer was only good for new customers. (now if you see one of those commercials now, they now clearly say that). So, my boss and co-workers both knew that the offer was only for new customers, but I said… what the hell? I’ll take the chance. So, I called Direct TV and they confirmed it was only for new customers. However, the lady wanted to get me to buy the package. She asked me what I would be willing to pay. Then she told me that she could give me a discount. I told her I would think about it. I later called back and got the deal plus they gave me NFL Sunday Ticket Mobile for free. Now, I didn’t get the NFL Sunday ticket for free, but I did get $20/month off and a $10/month service for free. That’s $150 I saved. It’s awesome and it’s totally worth it. NFL Sunday Ticket is the best. I may never leave my house on a football Sunday ever again.

The second example is First Class Upgrades. A couple of weeks ago, I went to Portland. I normally fly Delta. My flight was on Alaska air which is a code share partner with Delta. You are supposed to get all the perks on a code share partner flight that you do on Delta flight. I’m a gold medallion member and my boss is a platinum medallion member on Delta. This means we get free upgrades. While we were at the airport waiting for our flight to board in Portland, the representative stated that there were first class seats available for a small fee. My boss and I were puzzled because our tickets hadn’t been upgraded. On the flight up to Portland, he was told his ticket didn’t qualify for an upgrade. Well, he said.. it doesn’t hurt to ask. So, he marched right up there and asked about getting an upgrade. He came back with two first class seats. One for him and one for me. He asked about my ticket too. How awesome, right?

So, you can’t always get what you want… but it never hurts to try or to ask for it. You never know what you can get if you don’t ask for it. So go out there and get what you want by asking for it! I think I’ve learned my lesson. Don’t be afraid to ask. You’re no better off than you were when you didn’t ask…and you might just get something better than you expected. So, put a smile on your face and Ask… Ask.. Ask.
