Do-Re-Mi

Act 132:

It’s never too late… To Sing

It’s a life force of its own – in happiness, or sorrow, in hope, or despair, in prayer, or passion. Singing can ease the pain and celebrate the delights. It transcends language. It touches the soul.” – Patrick Lindsay

Quote in book: “To sing is to love and to affirm, to fly and soar, to coast into the hearts of the people who listen.” ~Joan Baez

I LOVE singing. It’s too bad that I’m not that great at it. Ok ok.. the truth is I’m decent. I just don’t like to admit it. I truly believe that I can carry a tune because of my dad. He could sing. He didn’t have one of those voices that one could make a living off of, but he was always in tune… which is saying a lot. He could sing everything and he did.

I know I got my love of music from him, but I also got my voice from him to. We would always sing together. As a kid, we would sing duets all the time. We used to sing “Endless Love”, “Baby Come To Me”, “The Next Time I Fall”, “Almost Paradise”, “Somewhere Out There”, “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love”, “Up Where We Belong”, “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart”, “Never Gonna Let You Go”, “Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now”. As my friend pointed out... looking back they might not have been appropriate for a father/daughter to sing to each other. Haha. Anyway, singing always makes me think of my dad. I know that my dad and I even talked about doing a duet at my wedding. Well, that will never happen, but I do have so many memories of us singing.

I sing all the time. I sing in the car. I sing in the shower. (I used to belt Whitney Houston's "The Greatest Love Of All" and it took me a long time to realize my whole family could hear me... singing badly!! haha) I sing karaoke. I sing at random parts of the day and sing random songs – hence the nickname “the jukebox”. I have video of me singing as a kid. I’ll upload it here when I get a chance.

There’s a story my dad used to always tell about me singing. He used to record me and my brother on tape all the time. He told me to sing something. I’m singing…then I say I’m going to the bathroom. I give the microphone to my brother. He starts babbling. I come back. Take the mic from my brother and start to sing again. He then bites me and I say on the mic that he bit me and then keep singing! Haha. It’s one of the funniest things ever! (and it’s all recorded somewhere). I need to find that tape!

There’s also evidence of me singing from 2 years ago. At my graduation banquet, I sang a little song as part of my acceptance speech to thank my classmates for voting me “Best Leader” of our section. They had been trying to get me to sing for them since the opening residential which was almost 2.5 years before the graduation. Anyway… Here’s the lyrics of what I sang for them

It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend.

There’s a video of it on Facebook…. Craziness. Anyway. I like to sing. Do you? If so, let’s go karaoke together sometime!!!

Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things not bad
Sing of happy not sad

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple to last
Your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not
Good enough for anyone
Else to hear
Just sing, sing a song

10 Points: Name the Musical and Song of the lyrics below – Hint: It’s my favorite musical (No…it’s not RENT)

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?

Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!

10 Points: Name the Musical and Song of the lyrics below

See, I really couldn't sing I could never really sing What I couldn't do was... - Sing!
I have trouble with the... -
Note!
It goes all around my... -
Throat!
It's a terrifying... -
Thing!
See, I really couldn't hear Which note was lower or was... -
Higher!
Which is why I disappear If someone says, "Let's start a... -
Choir!"

10 Points: Name the Artist and Song of the lyrics below

Sing it out
Boy you've got to see what tomorrow brings
Sing it out
Girl you've got to be what tomorrow needs
For every time that they want to count you out
Use your voice every single time you open up your mouth
Sing it for the boys, sing it for the girls
Every time that you lose it sing it for the world
Sing it from the heart
Sing it till you're nuts
Sing it out for the ones that'll hate your guts
Sing it for the deaf
Sing it for the blind
Sing about everyone that you left behind
Sing it for the world, sing it for the world

My Dad used to sing some songs to me at bedtime that I now realize probably weren't too appropriate. I do think he changed the words a bit, though. My favorites were "I love you" by the Beatles (really inappropriate lyrics), Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes, and the Boy in the Bubble and the Baby with the Baboon Heart.
