There’s No Place Like…

Act 157:

It’s never too late… To Make Your House Your Home

Stamp your personality on your home. Invest some love in it. Give it something of yourself. Your colours. Your pictures. Your favourite objects. In return, it will welcome you and your friends.” – Patrick Lindsay

Quote in book: “Home is where the heart is.” ~ Proverb

A house should be a home or feel lived in. I hate going to people’s houses and it feels like a hotel room. Those houses feel so sterile and clinical. I wanted to use clean, but there’s nothing wrong w/ clean. They are so impersonal. They look like what I call “Magazine” Houses or rooms. It’s like they took a picture of the Pottery Barn display case and recreated it in their home. Those display cases don’t even look that comfortable. Who makes everything match so closely like that??

Then there’s the celebrity houses that look like they just bought their furniture 3 hours before the camera crew got there. I was just watching an episode of Dirty Soap and that’s what one of the couples did right before their In Touch Magazine shoot. Why do people want to live in a magazine or put furniture in their house that is uncomfortable, but looks really great? I mean, seriously some of those couches look about as comfortable as sitting on a cardboard box with fabric over it.

A house should be comfortable. It should be warm and welcoming. I love visiting people’s houses that are a little bit messy so that it proves that people actually live there. It should be homey. Now not every house has to be all “homey” like an old grandmother’s house, but it should have that feeling of being lived in. That feeling like the furniture has actually been used. We used to have couches in our front room that no one ever sat in and they looked that way. There were two couches and two love seats. They had white upholstery and they stayed white. Shoot do you honestly think that if we actually sat in those things they would’ve stayed white?? No frickin way. However, they did look nice.

Every house should be a reflection of it’s owner. The owner’s style, personality, and tastes. But even if you are a little stiff and devoid of personality, you’re house doesn’t have to completely be like that. Put a picture of your loved ones up or a trophy or something that adds a little touch of you to the house instead of just leaving it vacant of any personal items.

I think that’s what makes your house your home. Putting in little accents of YOU everywhere. My place has the most comfortable couch, because I sit and watch TV all the time. My place has art work all over. However the thing that I think makes my house my home is I have a clock that has four pictures in the face of it of me and some of my family members. Note: The clock needs new batteries, because I’m too lazy to fix it… more proof it’s my place. My place also has tons of CDs to signify how important music is in my life. There are lots of other things that make my place a home, but the biggest reason is that it looks lived in… and it looks lived in like me! Haha For those who have ever lived with me, you know what that means. Hehe. =P

Does your house feel like a home? What do you do to make it that way? Any thoughts?
